U.S. v. Burton · No. 1:24-cr-00034 · D. Md.
Why did Bitcoin Rodney go to jail?
Here's the short answer, from the government's own paperwork:
Rodney Burton was arrested on January 3, 2024, in a federal case tied to HyperFund promotions.
On June 15, 2026, he pled guilty to ONE count — Count 1 of the ORIGINAL indictment: conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. A licensing charge.
Everything else is gone. The Judgment says it word for word: "Superseding Indictment and count 2 of original Indictment are dismissed on the motion of the United States."
Sentence: 32 months, credit for every day served since January 3, 2024. Released July 24, 2026. Home, on 3 years of supervised release.
But here's what the headlines never told you — he fought.
He did NOT plead early. The February 12, 2026 hearing transcript — the government's own record — shows him turning down their deals in open court and standing on fighting the case.
The government's answer? Nearly two years after his arrest, they stacked the case from 2 counts to 11 in a superseding indictment. More counts. More pressure. More years hanging over his head — while he sat locked up the whole time.
And when it finally ended, the superseder was dismissed on the government's OWN motion. After all that stacking, the only count left standing was the one licensing count from the very first indictment.
In Rodney's own words:
"I fought for over two years — 933 days. The government has way more money than me to fight with. They can fight forever. If I didn't take that one count, I'd still be sitting in there right now, still fighting, while my life passed me by. The choice was easy: plead to one licensing count, get out, and tell the story. So I came home. And now I'm telling it.
They needed a fall guy. That's the cover-up — stack the charges until a man has to choose between his freedom and a fight the government can fund forever. I chose freedom. Now read the documents and judge for yourself."
